It is the question every new paddler asks: how long does it take to learn to surf ski? The honest answer is that you will be paddling on day one, and comfortable within a few weeks. Here is what to expect.

Your first session
In your very first hour on the water, with a coach beside you, you will learn to set up your ski, hold the paddle, get on and off, and take your first proper strokes. Most people are genuinely surprised how far they get straight away.
The first few weeks
Balance is the main thing that improves fast. After a handful of sessions on calm water, sitting on the ski stops feeling tippy and your stroke starts to feel natural. This is where the fun really begins.
Progressing through the levels
We coach by levels, from L1 for first-timers through to L4 for elite ocean racing. You move up at your own pace as your skills build. Read Which Level Are You? to see the path from beginner to ocean paddler.
What affects how fast you progress
Three things: how often you paddle, your general fitness, and good coaching. Paddling weekly with a coach correcting your technique early is by far the fastest way to improve, and it stops bad habits forming.
You set the pace
There is no rush and no test to pass. Some people are happy doing relaxed fitness paddles on the river for years. Others chase downwind runs and races within a season. Both are great.
