Ocean Paddling Adventures in Western Australia: The Complete Guide
Western Australia has some of the best ocean paddling on the planet. A reliable summer sea breeze (the famous Fremantle Doctor), warm water, endless coastline and barely another paddler on it. This guide covers the best ocean paddling adventures in WA, from your first protected-water session to multi-day downwind camps at Ningaloo and Rottnest.
Why WA is a world-class ocean paddling destination
Perth's sea breeze blows almost every summer afternoon, turning the coast between Fremantle and Hillarys into a downwind playground. Add the Swan River for calm-water learning, Rottnest Island 18 km offshore, and the turquoise lagoons of Ningaloo Reef up north, and you have every kind of paddling adventure within one state.
Downwind runs near Perth
The classic Perth downwind run is City Beach to Port Beach, about 12 km of open ocean runners pushed along by the sea breeze. We run coached downwind sessions and a Saturday transport shuttle so you can paddle one way and get a lift back. The most famous run of all is The Doctor, the 27 km crossing from Rottnest Island to the mainland, raced every year by the world's best.
Weekly coached ocean sessions
You do not need to start with a big adventure. Paddle Collective runs coached sessions every week across four Perth locations: the WA Rowing Club in the CBD, Mosman Bay, Hillarys Marina and Port Beach in North Fremantle. Sessions are graded L1 to L4, so beginners start on calm river water and progress to open ocean at their own pace. All equipment is provided and your first session is free with the code firstsessionfree. Book a session or start with the beginner's guide to surf ski in Perth.
Multi-day paddle adventure camps
For the full adventure, we run multi-day camps along the WA coast with coaching, equipment and logistics all handled:
Ningaloo Dreaming (Exmouth, August). Downwind coaching over turquoise water on the Ningaloo Reef, with whale sharks, turtles and a legendary crew. $2,150 per person.
Island Escape Rotto (Rottnest Island, November). Paddle across to Rottnest, base up in Thomson Bay cottages with a support boat and chef catering, circle the island on downwind runs, then ride The Doctor course home. $2,400 per person, fully inclusive.
Down South Skates (Busselton, late November). Stunning South West coastline, world-class wineries and unforgettable downwind runs. From $1,400.
See all upcoming trips on our camps page.
Who can join an ocean paddling adventure?
If you can swim and you are reasonably active, there is an adventure for you. Camps include coaching and stable equipment, and our weekly sessions will get you ocean-ready faster than you expect. Most paddlers go from first stroke on the river to their first ocean session within a season.
FAQs
Do I need my own surf ski? No. Skis, paddles and safety gear are provided on sessions and camps, or available for hire.
When is the best time for downwind paddling in WA? October to March, when the sea breeze is most reliable. Ningaloo is best in the winter months.
How do I start? Book a coached session at any of our four Perth locations. Your first session is free with the code firstsessionfree.
